As Francois Prins, editor of the prestigious magazine of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust was quick to point out – RS Panels’ workshop looks almost like Jaguar’s Brown’s Lane experimental workshops of the 1950s
Almost! Yes, there was a few million dollars worth of race bred Ferrari 250 lurking in a corner and the intrusion of Italian racing red, obviously slightly offended this Jaguar purist’s eye. British racing green is such a gloriously understated colour!
It is for the building and restoration of historic Jaguars that RS Panels has become a global institution. But although this might be considered an act of unimaginable heresy to Big Cat enthusiasts, especially being so close to Jaguar’s British heartland, Bob Smith is quick to declare that the company has probably worked on as many famous Ferrari bodies as it has Jaguar.
These have included the awesome 250 GTOs, Testa Rossas and the 250 Pontoon.
RS Panels make all the jigs and bucks in-house, and a replacement hand beaten panel will fit to an original car without modification.
In fact, the quality of RS Panels’ work is considered to far outstrip the originals in many cases. This is to be expected; many cars from the 1950s and 60s would not have had so much time and effort lavished upon them. Who would have guessed in those days that by the end of the millennium these scarlet racecars would command the equivalent of a king’s ransom?
